Training Review - Week 12 - March 18 to 24

Monday I was still suffering with the annoying cough but dragged myself to the pool anyway. I only managed 750m before I tried to cough and ended up with a lung full of chlorinated water. Definitely one for the junk swim pile.

Tuesday I went for lazy bike commutes, just to get some numbers on the board. In the evening I should have gone swimming but decided to be a bit more sensible since I was still coughing and my resting heart rate is still in the 55-60 range.

Wednesday was another pair of lazy commutes with a slight extension when I realised I had forgotten my phone in the morning and had to go back.

Thursday I was out at a conference all day so I didn't have commutes. I did manage a trip to the pool in the evening. I did a solid 20-minute test just to see if I was completely clear of the flu, I am not.

Friday I had a day off work. I slept nearly 12 hours before getting up late. I did a very slow jog in the morning just to test out my lungs and ankle. At lunchtime I went to the pool to do a set of 100m reps. I started at 1:36 but by number 5 I couldn't get under 1:56, I abandoned the plan and just paddled for a while. Another for the junk swim pile.

Saturday I slept in again, completely missing my swim session. I am not sure if this is a side-effect of the flu or if I have some other health or stress problem. About lunchtime I dragged myself out for another slow jog. I had planned 6 miles but tripped after two and took a chunk out of my knee. I managed to shuffle another mile back to a road where Mrs M could pick me up.

Sunday I dragged myself out of bed, jogged to the pool, paddled for 20 minutes and jogged home again. It did nothing that would count as training but it did at least allow me to tick off one number for the week. Yet another on the junk swim pile. The only good thing was that I managed to force myself back out to do something and hopefully back in to some sort of habit after basically a fortnight off sick.

At least I am back to doing something but that is another wasted week really, and I am getting much too close to Spain to be missing so much. Three junk swims and a poor 20-minute time trial in one week. No attempt at a fast run or reps session. Not even a full set of bike miles.
